Natural Resources Canada

Requirement

The Government of Canada, Natural Resources Canada, in collaboration with the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Hazus-MH program, contracted with Working KnowledgeCSP to support the integration of KM concepts and strategies into the Canadian Natural Disaster Management Strategy. The Hazus (US) program developed and manages a nationally relevant standardized methodology that contains models for estimating potential losses from earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes.

Solution

Working KnowledgeCSP was a part of a multinational team whose effort, through a workshop and discussion groups, was focused on helping to ensure adaptation of Hazus in Canada, to build capacity for its use in Canada, and to establish a foundation for developing an integrated outreach/training program that extended beyond the needs of the Canadian Emergency Management community.

Topics addressed included: central knowledge retention and access, data characterization and reporting, development of best practices and guidelines for Hazus use, and the development of a national strategy for risk assessment and risk mitigation, and leveraging of US national lessons for Hazus implementation in Canada. The group presented these recommendations is a final report in Spring 2012.
